Catholics United rebuffs far-right attack machine
Today Catholics United noted the bipartisan groundswell of support for Governor Sebelius and responded to groups such as the Concerned Women of America, LifeNews.com, the Liberty Council and Operation Rescue who are seeking to use religion to smear Governor Sebelius. Catholics United, a pro-life organization, believes these groups are seriously misrepresenting the facts on Governor Sebelius’ record of working across party lines to reduce abortion in Kansas. James Salt, Catholics United organizing director, issued the following statement:
“Here are the facts:
The number of abortions performed in Kansas declined 10% over the last six years – and that is a conservative estimate. Catholics everywhere should applaud Governor Sebelius for finally charting a path out of the culture wars and actually doing something about abortion.
Governor Sebelius is committed to supporting many different strategies to reduce abortion. Pro-life Catholics are especially proud that Governor Sebelius signed into law the Stan Clark Pregnancy Maintenance Initiative Program that funded organizations like Catholic Charities. These programs provide vulnerable pregnant women with a wide range of crucial services to support them as they carry their pregnancies to term. Furthermore, leading pro-life Catholics, including a range of bipartisan elected officials, have voiced strong support for Governor Sebelius.”
To help keep the record straight, Catholics United has launched a website called www.CatholicsforSebelius.org and has published a statement with 26 leading Catholic scholars and theologians in supporting Governor Sebelius’ efforts at finding common ground in reducing abortions.
